Santa Rosa Plaza opened at it regularly scheduled time of 10 a.m. Friday morning after a fire prompted an evacuation just before closing late Thursday.

All but "a few" stores opened for business at 10, said mall marketing director Kim Hall.

An electrician and officials from PG&E were at the downtown site Friday morning examining what ignited the blaze that set off fire alarms just after 7 p.m. Thursday. The cause remains unknown, according to Hall.

The fire sent smoke and flames from a room of electrical panels on the mall's east side, near the Third Street underpass.

Santa Rosa Battalion Chief Jack Piccinini described the scene as a "meltdown."

The three panels supply power to the Disney Store, Eddie Bauer and a vacant room. The two stores will not open this morning.
