Wardine Herrick, descendant of two of Sonoma County's founding families,

died Tuesday in a car accident caused by a heart attack. She was 72.

Herrick, who was related to the early settlers of both Healdsburg and Santa

Rosa, lost control of her car after suffering a heart attack. The car crashed

into a tree.

Born and raised in Healdsburg, she was the great-grandaughter of Anita

Fitch Grant, whose father was Captain Henry Fitch, a San Diego sea captain and

trader who was the owner of the Sotoyome Rancho, which included the present

day city of Healdsburg. Herrick's great-great-great-grandmother was Dona Maria

Carrillo, owner of the land grant that comprises the city of Santa Rosa.

Described by husband as a strong and loving person, Herrick was a long-time

member of the Santa Rosa Garden Club and the Healdsburg Museum. She graduated

from Healdsburg High in 1941 and also attended Santa Rosa Junior College and

San Jose State.

She is survived by her husband, Ben Herrick of Santa Rosa; sons, Steven,

Andrew and Greg, also of Santa Rosa; daughter, Dixie Duffey of Moraga; and one

grandson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Daniels Chapel of the Roses in

Santa Rosa. There will be a private internment at Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

Donations may be made to the Healdsburg Museum, 221 Matheson, Healdsburg.
